At about 5 p.m. a Ford Explorer Sport Trac slammed into the back of a Chevy Malibu stopped in the middle of the road because of a flat tire. Four people were inside the stopped vehicle. The speed at which the truck was traveling when it hit the car remains unknown.
An 81-year-old woman and a six-year-old child were sitting in the backseat of the Malibu at the time of the accident. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the child was transported to Cook Childrens Medical Center where she later died from injuries sustained during the accident.
The driver of the sedan and the driver of the truck were also transported to local hospitals with injuries. Another passenger in the car declined treatment.
