Fatal Southlake Bike AccidentFamily and friends are mourning the death of a Southlake teen killed in a tragic accident. Authorities say the teen died from injuries he suffered when he was hit by a car as he was riding his bicycle home.

Police say the 16-year-old was riding his bicycle southbound on Byron Nelson Parkway when he tried to cross Lilac Lane and was hit by a car. Authorities say the Southlake Carroll Senior High School sophomore was heading home from a Boy Scout meeting at the time of the fatal accident. The accident reportedly occurred less than a mile from his home.

Police say the driver stopped and immediately called for help. While the crash remains under investigation, officials say charges are not expected.

The attorneys at Stephens, Anderson & Cummings send our most heartfelt condolences to the family during this time.

Bike Safety Tips

Most bicycle accidents are caused by motorists that simply do not see the bicyclists when they are in intersections or in the traffic lane. In a collision between a bicycle and an automobile, the cyclist is usually the most badly injured.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that cars and trucks leave at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist on the road and to look out for bicyclists when opening doors, pulling into driveways and crossing intersections.

Common bike injuries include:

  • Spinal injuries
  • Road rash contusions and abrasions
  • Fractured bones
  • Internal organ damage

These types of injuries often require extensive and costly medical treatment. If you or a loved one has been in a bicycle accident, you may be able to seek compensation for your pain and suffering.
