AAA Survey Finds Majority of Americans Afraid to Travel in Self-Driving Cars

Posted on behalf of Stephens, Anderson & Cummings on Mar 13, 2017 in Auto Accidents

autonomous vehicleEven though 59 percent of U.S. drivers say they will look for autonomous vehicle technology in their next vehicle, 78 percent of drivers say they are afraid to travel in a self-driving car, according to a new survey from AAA.

The survey also revealed:

  • Just 10 percent of respondents said they would feel safer riding in a self-driving car.
  • Fifty-four percent of drivers think sharing the roads with autonomous vehicles would make driving less safe.
  • Thirty-four percent say autonomous vehicles will not change the safety of American roadways.
  • Women and baby boomers feel less safe regarding autonomous vehicles than men, Generation X and millennial drivers.
  • Millennials are most likely to want self-driving technology (70 percent) compared to baby boomers (51 percent) or Generation X (54 percent).

American drivers’ fear of riding in self-driving vehicles remained steady from last year's survey to this year's. That is why AAA is urging automakers to gradually introduce autonomous vehicle technologies to help ensure drivers are informed and comfortable with the change.

Testing of Autonomous Vehicles

In previous tests, autonomous technologies showed great variation in performance, which is of great concern to many Americans. Eighty-one percent of drivers say autonomous vehicle technologies should perform consistently in all vehicles.

The U.S. Department of Transportation released self-driving car regulations last year to help ensure the safe testing and use of these types of vehicles.
